The Union Flag and HiFi Products

How many DAB radio manufacturers are releasing either a red, white or blue radio or a radio with a Union Flag on this summer?

 

I’ve lost count.  And hilariously, they all call them ‘limited editions’ – but never choose to define just how limited that edition is. 

 

But, something topped all of the press releases that I’ve seen on this subject this week – Sky have released a Sky Box remote control with the Nation’s flag plastered all over it (it’s called the Jubliee Remote – inspired!) and are charging £ 30.00 for the privilege of owning it.  The upside - the chip inside is double (yes readers – double !) the size of the one used on the standard remote, and means the controller is compatible with even more TV brands – 727 in total.  Genius!

 

I’m all for celebrating the Diamond Jubilee.  I’m all for celebrating the astonishing excellence of the Olympic and Para-Olympic games. I’m also keen on the concept of limited edition products that are different from the standard versions.  But seriously, how long after the celebrations have ended will that poorly painted/printed red/white/blue thing you’ve got in your house start to look a little tired? 

 

Doesn’t it feel like hanging the Union Flag out of your bedroom window during the World Cup…..you know…..you’re all excited and brimming with expectation (to an unrealistic and unreasonable level bordering on madness if you support England) in the first couple of hours and then…..it all starts looking a little tatty around the edges. 

 

Are we so totally enamored with the Olympics and the Jubilee that we’ll spend our money on anything painted the right colours ?  I don’t think the British public is that daft and particularly not when money is too tight to mention. Isn’t it kind of…..odd…..for some marketing people (probably called Tristram and Jocasta) to think we are ?

 

I am in the market for a Union Flag loo seat though. Anyone know anyone ?
